Match commentary for the visually impaired – can you help us?

Following a very positive response to our recent survey, the Lewes FC Supporters Club committee has decided to press ahead with providing in-stadium audio commentary for visually impaired fans at The Dripping Pan. Now we need your help, both with raising funds and finding volunteer commentators. Here’s what we’re planning to do and how you can get involved.

What we plan to provide

The Supporters Club want to purchase a kit similar to this one from Access Audio. It provides all the equipment we need for a commentator and headsets for up to 10 supporters.

Using this equipment, visually impaired supporters can sit/stand anywhere in The Dripping Pan and still hear the commentary.

If we find the service is in high demand – and we believe it may be of interest to some supporters who still have reasonable vision, but can’t see certain areas of the pitch – then we can easily purchase more headsets. There’s no real limit to the number of headsets that can be used in the ground.

The cost of the kit will be roughly £3,000 (excluding VAT), which is where you come in.

Help fund the equipment

We’ve already had some generous donations made towards this project, totalling:

We’d love you to help us fund this project. If you can afford a small donation, please click the button for the relevant amount below.

Alternatively, if you’re a local business who wants to sponsor the project (not necessarily for the whole amount) then we’d love to hear from you. Please fill out the contact form at the bottom of this page.

Volunteer commentators

We’re hoping to put together a small team of commentators, who will not only provide the match commentary but help look after the equipment – signing it in/out at the start/end of games, making sure the battery packs are charged etc.

Our plan is to get our commentators trained by experts, so that we make sure we’re covering the needs of the visually impaired spectators.

We want to cover both women’s and men’s first-team home games, so we’d like to have a small team of commentators to call upon. It’s a voluntary role, but we think the rewards of helping visually impaired supporters enjoy the game will be massive.

If you think you’d like to be part of our commentary team, please fill out the contact form below and we’ll be in touch.
