Cheltenham 2 vs Lewes 1: Not at the races

Lewes didn’t so much fall at the last, more weren’t at the races at all at Cheltenham, writes Mike Wallis.

It was a game that felt very mid-table with neither side allowing the other many chances.

Cheltenham scored two scrambly goals that probably should’ve been defended better, either side of Olivia Carpenter slotting home from Trewhitt’s through ball, past the grumpy Cheltenham goalkeeper appealing for offside.

The officials throughout were erm… erratic? The referee didn’t so much lose control of the game, rather didn’t really have control in the first place. The lino may as well have been flipping a coin to make calls, such was the randomness of his decision making.

The second half was a complete non-event as Cheltenham shut the game down pretty well and restricted Lewes to a few half chances.

But then. The game was almost over. The game would’ve been over had the keeper just kicked the ball upfield.

Instead increasingly angry Cheltenham goalkeeper was already a bit annoyed with her defence and her attack and everyone around her, but when Ylenia Priest collided with her she kicked out in retaliation and the referee had the red card out before there could be any debate.

However, there was further debate. Cheltenham players were cross with the decision, Lois Roche argued it should’ve been a Lewes penalty, the linesman and the the referee had a long conference and decided to do nothing. Cue more arguing between players, Ylenia Priest then got sent off for reasons unknown and walked the wrong way off the pitch, and a Cheltenham outfield player had to go in goal.

.Lewes managed one tame shot at the stand-in goalkeeper and that was that, Lewes’s race was run. Cheltenham win the mid-table Gold Cup.
