Plenty of Rooks escaped doing their Christmas shopping and headed for the famous Dulwich Beer Festival with a football match going on in the background, writes Mike Wallis.
The low sun prevented us seeing much of the first half, which was a relief as it was rubbish. Dan had a better view of the first goal from the other end, describing it as coming off a defender, a striker and then rolling in to the net. 0-1. Dulwich deserved it.
A familiar figure played a key role in the rest of the match. Toby Bull, on his first game against us since his departure in the summer, played a Santa Claus role and handed Lewes a couple of Christmas gifts.
First, he wiped out Alex Kpakpe on the edge of the box and protested that he got the ball, but he didn’t. Charlie Walker twatted the penalty down the middle for 1-1.
Then Lewes woke up, Kpakpe had a chance at the far post and managed to hit it straight up in the air, Unwin had a strike from distance, Walker was always making a nuisance of himself but not quite creating a chance.
After half time, the game settled down. Neither side created many chances. Louis Rogers tipped Dulwich’s best effort over the bar to keep it level. Lewes had a few free kicks in decent areas but always frustratingly took them short rather than having a shot. The consensus was we’d take a point.
Ten minutes left. Lewes won yet another corner and for once got a shot away. Jack Burchell, covering for the absent Ryan Bernal, flicked it on at the near post and past the hapless Bull for 2-1.
Toby Bull then gave us another Christmas gift. Last season Dulwich’s goalkeeper gifted us a goal by hammering a clearance into Danny Bassett’s arse and back into the net. This was much more simple. Bull controlled a back pass, attempted a short pass which was cut out by Walker, who slid the ball into the now open goal. 3-1.
Devonte West added a fourth on the break, cutting inside and having his shot deflected in off someone or something. Delirium and confusion in equal measure behind the goal. Toby Bull give us a wave? He doesn’t.
There was still time for the Dulwich sub Cook to get sent off after a challenge I didn’t have an especially good view of. He wasn’t very happy about it and tried to start on Parish Muirhead on the way out, an unwise move.
That’s two wins in a row now for the first time since August. Onto league strugglers Welling next week, with their game abandoned before it started today with rumours flying around about some sort of pre-match bust up. ’Tis the season and all that.
Lewes: Rogers, Kpakpe (Morgan), Christian-Law, Watson, Hamstead (Hamouchene), Allen, Franzen-Jones (West), Unwin (Clark), Walker, Muirhead, Burchell.
Supporters Club man of the match: Even if he is sporting a horrendous mullet and moustache combo, Charlie Walker had an excellent game today.
