I try to get to a few away games every season and Exeter was always going to be a new ground for me, writes Mike Wallis. They eventually decided that this game would be played at Devon FA at Newton Abbot.
I made it to four away games last season: Cheltenham (lost), Wimbledon (lost), Plymouth (lost), Oxford (lost). I’m spotting a trend here.
Anyway, I had a nice weekend walking the coast path (more on that here and here, should you be interested) and headed for Newton Abbot.
It started so well, the through ball found its way to Sydney Schreimaier who was clean through and… passed the ball to the keeper, who still managed to fumble the ball out for a corner.
And then the arrival of Baby Mockford distracted me to the extent that I missed Exeter’s first goal. I did see the second though, Lewes again making a mess of clearing a corner and Exeter’s number 9 scrambled the ball over the line.
The second half was bad tempered but mostly inconsequential. Exeter added a third on the break after the referee missed an obvious foul, then Lewes pulled one back after Johnson’s cross was flapped into her own net by the Exeter keeper. Somehow the linesman decided this was offside but was overruled by the referee.
The referee decided to play 15 minutes added time for some reason, where not much happened on the pitch but quite a lot of shouting was done off it.
I’m starting to wonder if I’m bringing the bad luck to these away trips…
