Lewes 1 vs Bowers & Pitsea 1: You just keep us hanging on

How late do you want your goals? We left it to the 89th minute to notch against Whitehawk in midweek, and here we waited until four minutes of injury time had passed before opening our account. Forget Who Gives a Crap? We’re leaving it so late we should be sponsored by Southern Rail.

Still, it’s nice to see us scoring the late goals instead of conceding them. Late strikes by Cheshunt, Hashtag and Dulwich have cost us five points over the past couple of months, points that would certainly have eased the jitters of fans keeping a nervous eye on how close we are to the positions that end the season with an R next to them.

This game has certainly divided opinion amongst the fan base offering their twopenneth on Facebook and the forum. Some think it’s the worst performance since Mick Fleetwood and Sam Fox hosted The Brits, others believe we were unlucky not to snaffle all three points. This will almost certainly cost me an invite to the Curmudgeons’ Christmas Party, but I’m in the latter camp – I thought it was a big improvement on the midweek defeat to the key janglers.

Certainly, Bowers had keeper David Hughes to thank for taking even a point back to Essex. I didn’t realise at the time from my perch in the commentary box, but he made a wonderful fingertip save to just divert Jack Meeres’ late Thunderbastard™️ onto the crossbar, and he made a couple of decent saves from Sablier and Ladapo prior to that too.

In fact, the only time they really threatened our goal at all was when they scored. They took a shortish corner and, as you can see from this still from the Your Instant Replay highlight, we gave their lad enough space to set up a car boot sale.

The ball was crossed in to Teniola, whose close-range shot was blocked by the feet of Toby Bull, but they got first dibs on the rebound too, Luke Reeve bundling it home.

Despite dominating possession and chances, it didn’t feel like the equaliser would come. Shae Hutchinson – back from a spell out with injury – provided some much needed spark from the bench, and he had the best chance to equalise. Sablier slid through one of his hallmark defence-splitters and Shae raced on to the ball, rounding the keeper, but forcing himself too wide in the process, meaning the shot from a tight angle ended up in The Philcox.

Bassett, Ekpiteta, the Meeres crossbar rattler and other chances followed, but it wasn’t until the 94th minute that we got our reward. Bassett got the better of a tussle with a centre-back, laid the ball off to Ekpiteta, who in turn slid in Sablier, unmarked on the edge of the box.

Now, I love Marcus Sablier. He threads passes through gaps that don’t even exist, but shooting is not his core strength (well, apart from halfway line lobs against Cray). But even I was willing him to shoot with only the keeper between him and last-gasp glory. Luckily, he’s calmer than I am, and he slotted a pass back to Bassett.

Truth be told, it wasn’t the greatest pass in the world. It ended up behind Bassett, but Danny slammed on the brakes, controlled the ball with his first touch, and banged it home with his second. Have a bit of that.

Yes, it would have been very nice to bag three, but who knows how important that point could be come the end of the season? Our next three fixtures are all away: Tuesday night at league leaders Dover, a derby at Hastings, and the mother of all injustices, the rerun against second-placed Cray Valley. Right now, we need all the points we can get.

Lewes: Bull, Warren, Meeres, Spinks, Jones (Antonio), Sablier, Allen, Jalloh (Ekpiteta), Finney (Hutchinson), Ladapo, Bassett

Unused subs: Kaiser, Nano

Supporters Club man of the match: Wouldn’t argue too strongly with the official choice, Josh Spinks, but Shae Hutchinson’s arrival on the hour changed the game, giving us much greater threat in behind their robust defence. So he gets it. Sorry, Josh.
