The start of the season is always tricky, both on and off the field.

The Wi-Fi wasn’t working in the club shop, the payment terminals were playing up, the iPad that powers the scoreboard had only 10% battery left and nobody could find the charger, the teamsheets were showing players’ middle names: all those little problems that will get ironed out once we get back into the swing of things, but for now results in volunteers tearing around the Pan trying to troubleshoot.

At least we (think) we’ve managed to solve one problem now: the intermittent nature of the PA system. Anyone who’s been to the Pan in recent times will have noted that the poor sod announcing the teams ends up doing a passable Norman Collier impression, as the mic keeps cutting in and out.

This, we realised a couple of weeks ago, is almost certainly because the tech geniuses who were paid Lord Knows How Much to fit the new PA system put the aerial inside a cabinet, meaning reception was limited to about ten square metres. A £15 cable from Amazon (courtesy of the Supporters Club) has solved the problem. Which will probably come as a relief to men’s player Charlie Walker, who was the other week announced as Charlie Wa…ker, making it sound like we were censoring an expletive surname.

Former Rooks keeper Laura Hartley could have been forgiven for letting out a few expletives when she was lobbed by an Olivia Johnson cross 17 minutes into this one, the ball flying over her outstretched hands and into the net. A debut goal for the bright winger, albeit a hugely fortunate one.

Still, Lewes were reasonably good value for their lead at that point, having started by the better of the two sides. But the goal seemed to unsettle the new-look Rooks more than them. Balls were being misplaced, players weren’t on the same wavelength, turnovers were ten a penny. Captain Howells cracked the post with a fierce shot midway through the half, but the threat dwindled and Hashtag grew into the game.

They got their second-half equaliser from the penalty spot. I think it was Flo Jackson that threw her hands above her head when attempting to block a shot, and once the ball struck her palms there was only ever going to be one outcome. The visitors buried the spot-kick.

As the game wore on, it was Hashtag who were looking the most likely to find the winner, although sub Una Lue had probably the best chance to bury it, her close-range header flying over the bar right at the death.

We’ve had worse starts (just ask the fellas), but we might come back to look at this as two points dropped rather than one gained.
