Lewes 7 (seven) vs MK Dons 0: The perfect warm-up

You’d need a heart of pure asphalt not to feel for MK Dons. Their young side has taken an absolute shelling this season. Ahead of this game, they’d taken only one point and had a goal difference of -107. With the Sussex Cup Final coming up on Tuesday, surely Nat would take it easy and give squad players a run out? Erm… not a bit of it.

To be fair, picking a full-strength side wasn’t going all Joffrey Baratheon (ask a Game of Thrones fan) on the Dons. The Rooks hadn’t had a game since the end of last month, so Nat probably wanted to get some match sharpness back in the girls before the big one on Tuesday. And, after a fairly slow start, they certainly found their stride.

Lois Roche got the ball rolling, a stooping header at the back post giving the Rooks the lead after about 20 minutes. Paula Howells smashed one in off the backside off a defender for two, but they were the only goals notched before half-time.

The second half was more clinical. Hannah Godfrey profited from a keeper fumble to make it three, Paula Howells smashed in a Thunderbastard for four, Connolly-Brame tapped home Fatuga-Dada’s great cross for five, and it was Fatuga-Dada herself with the tap-in for six. All that was left was for Paula Howells to nab herself one of the match balls for number seven. You can tell she was tiring – she only stroked it into the bottom corner rather than walloping it.

At the other end, Emily Moore didn’t have a save to make. In fact, we could have done with her in the home end, as shot after shot threatened pints, small children and pooches soaking up the sun on the terraces. Hat tip to director Ben who volleyed one errant shot straight back on to the field, an effort that was just too late for a nomination in the ‘Bravery’ category of the Lewes FC Values Awards, which were dished out after the game.

Those awards included recognition for the Supporters Club’s very own Thursday Club of maintenance volunteers and the living legends that are Barbara and David Arnold.

Let’s hope there are more trophies being dished out to the Rooks when they take on Brighton U-19s on Tuesday night at Lancing…
