Watford 0 vs Lewes 0: No sting from the Hornets

“Do you want to write the report for this one?” said Mike before the game, having gamely stepped up to write yesterday’s report.

“Sure,” I said, practically guaranteeing a goalless draw that, of course, followed.

Not that this was an a dull affair for Emma Byrne’s first game in the dugout. Both sides had chances, both smacked the metalwork (it’s not woodwork anymore, face facts). But both probably deserved no more than the point they went home with.

Watford started the brighter. There was only six minutes on the scoreboard when a dipping Hornets’ shot from the left edge of the box twanged off Emily Moore’s bar. But it was the Rooks who went on to dominate the rest of the half.

Paula Howells (part of a new front two with Chelsea Ferguson) hit a sweet pass into the path of Rebecca Trewhitt, who in a glorious example of nominative determinism, hit her shot true and low, but not beyond the reach of the Watford stopper.

Lois Roche came even closer towards the end of the half, her shot being cleared off the line. But the chance of the half fell to Ferguson. She did brilliantly to chase down a long Moore clearance and dipped past her marker. She got to the byline and looked up for a teammate to pass to, but none had made the journey quickly enough, leaving Ferguson to see her fierce shot parried at the near post.

The half-time break worked out better for Watford than the Rooks, with the second period being a much more even affair, with both sides creating decent chances.

Emily Moore made a terrific save to keep out a close-range Hornets header, and then immediately kickstarted a counter-attack which ended with Ferguson pinging a shot off the post, and then walloping the rebound into the Terry Parris Terrace.

Alas, the referee had nothing other than a phalanx of subs and a flurry of bookings to scribble in her notebook. The match reporter didn’t have much more in his, either, though it’s worth noting the Rooks haven’t been beaten at home in almost a year. The visit of Bitcoin-fuelled Real Bedford towards the end of the month might test that impressive streak.

Lewes: Moore, Harvey, Godfrey, Priest, Brant (c), Roche (Rowe), Schreimaier, Trewhitt (Rolf), Lane (Gilligan), Howells, Ferguson (Carpenter)

Unused Subs: Banaras, Edwards

Supporters Club player of the match: Maddie Brant was awesome at left-back. Snapping into tackles and snuffing everything out down the Watford right.
